From Awkward Intros to Big Opportunities: The Magic of Networking
Let’s be real—networking can feel like one of those things we know we should do, but somehow, it ends up at the bottom of the to-do list, right next to “finally organize my Google Drive.” But let me tell you, networking is the cheat code to growing your brand, making connections, and landing opportunities you didn’t even know existed.
I was recently reminded of this at the Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce Networking Event. Now, I’ll be honest—I walked in thinking, Okay, I’ll shake a few hands, smile a lot, maybe grab a free snack, and dip. But what actually happened? I met some amazing people, had conversations that sparked new ideas, and walked away with potential collaborations that could take Captured Canvas to the next level.

Women-Owned Businesses Took Center Stage One of the highlights of this month’s event was seeing the Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce acknowledge and celebrate women-owned businesses. It was a powerful moment to witness a room full of brilliant, hardworking women being recognized for their contributions to the local business scene. It reminded me why spaces like this matter—because when we show up, support each other, and share our stories, we grow together.
Shoutout to the Real MVP of Networking Another highlight? Running into my friend Audris Torres, who really has her 15-second elevator pitch down to a science. Like, if there was an Olympic sport for introducing yourself concisely and with confidence, she’d be taking home the gold. Watching her in action reminded me that when you know your brand and can communicate it with ease, people listen. Definitely taking notes for the next event!
My Trick for Remembering Names (Because I Need It!) Okay, confession time—I struggle with remembering names the first time I meet people. Anyone else? To make sure I don’t embarrass myself when I follow up, I use a simple trick: I associate their name with something memorable about them—maybe their business, an interesting fact they shared, or even a unique fashion choice. So if I meet a “Lisa” who owns a bakery, in my head, she’s “Lisa, the cupcake queen.” Works like a charm!
Why Networking is a Game-Changer for Your Brand Your brand isn’t just about the visuals—it’s about the relationships you build. Think about it: people want to support businesses they trust, and that trust comes from real connections. Whether you’re a photographer like me, a small business owner, or someone still figuring out their next step, the right connections can open doors you didn’t even know were there.
Tips to Make Networking Less Awkward & More Effective
Go in with an open mind – Don’t just think about what you can get from a networking event. Instead, think about how you can offer value to others. You’d be surprised how a simple “How can I support you?” can turn into a lasting business relationship.
Have a quick intro ready – You don’t need a rehearsed elevator pitch (we’re not robots), but be able to sum up what you do in a way that makes people want to learn more. For me, it’s as simple as:
“Hey, I’m Malaika! I run Captured Canvas, where I help small businesses tell their stories through photography and branding. If you ever need personal branding photos that actually feel like YOU, let’s talk.”Follow up (seriously, do it!) – The magic isn’t just in meeting people, it’s in what happens after. Send a quick email, connect on LinkedIn, or even slide into their DMs (professionally, of course). A simple “Great meeting you! Let’s stay in touch” goes a long way.
Don’t underestimate local events – You don’t have to fly out to some big, expensive conference to make powerful connections. That Elizabeth Chamber event? A room full of local entrepreneurs, business owners, and creatives—all potential clients, partners, or future collaborators. Your city probably has similar events, so get out there!
Networking isn’t just about collecting business cards or making small talk—it’s about building real relationships that can help you grow. And who knows? The next person you meet might be the key to your next big opportunity.
So, tell me—what’s your best (or worst) networking experience? Drop it in the comments! And if you see me at the next event, come say hey—I promise I won’t awkwardly hover by the snack table this time.
